Wondering how to get a fence permit in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey?

The good news is – It’s not that complicated! There are a few more steps to take if you have a pool on your property, but otherwise it’s very straightforward.

Keep reading our step-by-step guide to getting a fence permit in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey.

Step 1: Determine What Permit You Need

What type of permit do you need for a fence in Ho-Ho-Kus? It depends! If you don’t have a pool on your property, all you will need is the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus Fence Permit Application.

This one-page form is very easy to fill out. The cost for a fence permit is $50.

If you do have a pool on your property, you will have to fill out a building application. These types of applications do not have a flat fee.

There are two forms you will need if you are installing a fence on a property in Ho-Ho-Kus that has a pool:

Construction Packet

Building Subcode Technical

For the sake of this post, we are going to focus on filling out the regular fence permit application.

Filling Out The Fence Permit Application

The Ho-Ho-Kus Fence Permit Application is a one page document. If you’re looking at it, you can see that it is pretty straightforward.

Property Information

The first pieces of information that the borough needs is property information. This includes the works site, block, and lot.

Ho-Ho-Kus also wants to know where the fence is going. There are different rules depending on the fence’s location, so you will have to mark if it is going in the front, side, or rear.

Property Owner Information

For this part, you need to include your name as well as your address and contact information. They will call or email you if they have any questions about your application.

Agent Information

On this line of the Ho-Ho-Kus fence permit application, they are asking for the name of the company that is installing your fence. We told you this isn’t too difficult!

Fence Information

The next few lines are all about the type of fence. Here is where you will include the height of the fence and the height of the posts.

Narrow Spaced Aluminum Black Fence

Sometimes, fence installation companies do not include the height of the posts on their contracts. If you have any questions about the height of the posts (they are sometimes higher than the panels depending on the fence type) please reach out to your salesperson.

This section also asks for the type of fence. If you are unsure where you fence falls under, please call your sales rep or fence company office and they will point you in the right direction.

Residential vinyl swimming pool fencing barrier that is up to NJ pool code

You will also need to indicate whether or not your new fence will enclose a pool. It even says on the application that:

“*If a fence surrounds a pool it shall meet all requirements for pool safety and a building permit application must be completed and submitted to the building department. Additional fees will apply.”

The last part of this section is just including the total cost of the fencing project. This should be clearly stated on your contract.

Step 2: Highlight The Fence On A  Property Survey Copy

Now that you’ve finished filling out this simple fence installation application, you will need to get a copy of your property survey as well. You will need to mark up your property survey with a highlighter showing the location on the fence on your property.

If you’re having Artistic Fence install your new fence (nice choice!) we can do this next step for you. We’ll highlight the survey if you are unsure of the location and send it back to you to submit.

Step 3: Sign & Pay!

Now all that’s left to do is to sign your application and pay the fee!

As we mentioned above, the Ho-Ho-Kus fence permit application has a fee of $50. You can pay by cash or check. If you have a pool on your property, your fee will be more because of the building application.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Now that you filled out your fence application and marked up your survey, you’re ready to submit your application!

You can do so by dropping off your paperwork and payment at borough hall.
