As the winter season settles in and temperatures drop, you might think it’s not the ideal time to tackle outdoor projects. But what if we told you that winter is actually the perfect time to install a fence? Yes, you heard that right! Braving the cold might just be the smartest decision you make for your property.
When it comes to fence installation, winter offers unique advantages that make it an opportune time to get the job done. In this article, we’ll uncover (with a snow shovel) the reasons why winter is a cool time to install a fence. Trust us – if you’re considering a fence in the new year, you don’t want to wait. Here are the three main benefits of installing a fence during winter:
One of the biggest advantages of installing a fence in winter is that you can get ahead of your neighbors and beat the spring rush.
As I’m typing this blog post, all is fairly quiet here at our office in Passaic. The schedule is ready for next-day estimates, we’re building fences the day the contract is signed, and as long as the weather is cooperating, we’re getting installers out there to expertly install fences with absolutely no rush.
But soon, this will all change. When the the first sunny, slightly-warmer that winter weekend hits in late February or March, the phones start ringing and THEY. DON’T. STOP.
That’s because as soon as it gets nice out here in Jersey and we start looking at our yards, we start realizing that they need a little TLC before all of the outdoor festivities begin. Once this fairer weather hits, it creates longer wait times for you. Each season is different, but there have been multiple years where customers have had to wait 1-2 months for an estimate.
Don’t get left behind. Beat the spring rush and get on the schedule now to ensure the shortest wait times and most detailed attention from your fence installer.
Have you seen the cost of eggs recently? You have to save money where you can.
That’s another reason why winter is a great time to get a fence installed. There are typically no supply shortages at this time, so we don’t have to worry about crazy increases from our supplier (yet). This can all change based on a number of different factors later in the year that are completely out of a fence installer’s control.
We know that prices only seem to go up on everything now a-days, so by getting your fence project ordered in the beginning of the year, you can ensure the best price and know you are making a smart choice.
We touched on this benefit a bit above, but I wanted to point it out again. Not only do you save time in getting your fence estimate in the winter, but you save time throughout the entire project! During the winter, fence contractors are slower than in the spring all around. This means our wood shop and PVC shop can build your fence fast, orders of aluminum and chain link come in faster, our office can get your permit approved quicker, and our installers can break ground quicker!
Things are steady in the winter, which means we don’t typically have to worry about fence supply shortages or maxed out installation schedules. That doesn’t mean we don’t have to worry about anything, though..
Snowy Weather: Heavy snow can delay the installation process. If we’re going to get one of those big snowstorms (think around a foot) we’re not going to be able to install your fence that day. If it snows just a little, we’ll most likely still be out there installing… we’ll just have to shovel a little first!
Frozen Ground: During the winter months, a lot of people call with concerns about the ground freezing. Only in extreme cases is it ever cold enough here in New Jersey for the ground to be too frozen for fence installation. We have specialized machinery to help us dig and since our schedule is a bit more flexible, we’ll even move installation days if we think temperatures are too low for a successful installation. We’ve found that unless it’s below freezing for a few days in a row, our installation crews are pretty good at getting fences installed
